Preparing for the School Year

As summer comes to a close, it's time for your soon-to-be sophomores to begin preparing for the school year ahead. In particular, your 10th grade students should begin preparing to take their PSATs this fall.

What are PSATs?

The PSAT, or Preliminary SAT, is a standardized test administered by the College Board - the same organization that administers the SATs and AP exams. The PSAT serves multiple purposes. The exam prepares students for future exams, by offering a real test-taking experience that mirrors the SAT's subject matter and test conditions. The scores are used to gauge students' readiness for the SAT exam, and the feedback provided along with with test results is crucial for creating a future SAT study plan.

Outside of preparation and assessment, PSAT scores are vital because they are used to grant entry to honors societies, as well as help students access competitive scholarships, like the National Merit Scholarship. Fortunately, we've put together a preliminary list to help your students prepare for their PSATs.

PSAT Preparation

  • Understand the Test Format: Students should firstly familiarize themselves with the test structure and the subject matter covered. The exam is broken up into three sections: Reading, Writing and Language, and Math, and takes 2 hours and 25 minutes to completed.
  • Review and Practice: Students should begin to review contents and sample questions: The CollegeBoard offers free practice tests on their website, which students should take in order to gauge their current knowledge and identify strengths and weaknesses. This information will be crucial to share with the AtomicMind team, so we can uniquely cater our support to your student needs.
