Preparing for the School Year

As the summer comes to a close, it's time for students to start preparing for their first year of high school! As students embark on this transitional moment, AtomicMind has prepared a final summer checklist for your students.

End of Summer Checklist

  • Complete Summer Assignments/Reading: Ensure that your student starts the school year on the right track by completing any remaining summer assignments or reading. If your student needs support with schoolwork or guidance on creating a reasonable timeline, please reach out to AtomicMind.
  • Identify Academic Goals: Prior to the start of the school year, take the opportunity to sit down with your student to discuss their specific goals for the coming year. Do they want to improve in a particular subject, or become more involved in a student organization? Setting clear objectives can be crucial for motivating your student and providing them with a sense of direction. For additional guidance, our Head Advisors and Subject Tutors specialize in helping students set and meaningfully work toward their goals.
  • Set Study Habits Early: After the first few days of school, assignments are activities pick up rapidly. Collaborate with your student to identify ways to stay ahead of schoolwork. For our specific study habits, check out our list below:

Study Habits:

Starting a new school year after a long summer break can be a strenuous transition. As your student prepares for 9th grade, we've completed a list of study habits and tips to support their success:

  • Create a Reasonable Study Schedule: Whether students use an online platform like GoogelCal or physical planner, they should familiarize themselves with their semester schedule. What days are busy with school and extracurricular activities? What are optimal days to study or complete assignments? Ninth graders should come up with a reasonable study plan prior to the start of school.
  • Prepare Study Materials: Stock up on necessary study materials, from flashcards to highlighters. If students prefer virtual flashcards, they can make a free account with Quizlet.
  • Set Students Up for Success: If students foresee needing support in a particular subject, or hope to improve their grade in a specific course, AtomicMind can match your student with one of our incredible Subject Specialists.
